However, there are several reasons why you may want to do so anyway: Gameplay-wise, GW1 and GW2 are completely different games, and there is no need to play GW1 before playing GW2. I do expect this number to drop significantly when GW2 is released, but ArenaNet have said that they will keep the GW1 servers running as long as there are sufficient people playing it, so even after the launch of GW2, you will still be able to continue playing GW1. Right now, there are still plenty of people playing the game, and you should have no problems finding people to adventure with. It could still be later, thoughĪll this means, that you still have at least several months to play GW1.
So personally, I expect the game late Q1 2012/early Q2 2012 at the earliest. After that there will be a public beta, and then the release. All we know is that the game is in closed alpha testing now, and they will start closed beta before the end of the year. The only thing ArenaNet have said is, "when it's done", because they want the game to be the very best they can make, and they will take whatever time they need to make it so. ArenaNet themselves have never given a release date, and the 2011 estimates on some websites (such as IGN and Gamestop) were only placeholders by the sites/retailers.
